mr. ernest lau
well, now for the part about the actual chess competition.
today was the ernest lau (sec 3) chess championship. sec3 tournament means that while everyone plays, only the sec3s will win trophies.
i couldn't decide whether it was worth going for this today. my decision was finally made at 3.30 pm, on the closing minute of registration, when i grabbed all my stuff and rushed down to the nucleus and i arrived to find myself just in time.
well, the whole thing eventually turned out to be a farce. 7 prizes for the top 7 sec 3s. number of sec 3s who came: 7. makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?
i also found some notable absentees. the defending champion of 2003 and 2004 was absent. so was RASTALAND/foodwarrior. i have no clue where he went. kyne wong was absent as well. jason goh and nat ong were not participating, but were present. how nice of them. all this left me as top seed of sec3 and 2nd seed overall.
and so the games began:
round 1 -- win by illegal move
round 2 -- win by illegal move
round 3 -- win by illegal move
round 4 -- uh...don't recall, doesn't really matter here, but i won (mayeb it was another illegal move win)
round 5 -- totally lost position, flag had dropped, but this is where friends come into play. clement lim (sec2), with nothing to play for, kindly resigned. how 1337.
round 6 -- opponent blundered piece
round 7 -- with the sec3 championship in the bag, i could sit back and relax against the 1st seed. and lost, but of course it didn't matter.
overall standings:
- tied for 1st, 2nd on tiebreak due to screwy solkoff
- clear 1st out of sec 3s
Praise God
